DJ Shocca era la: “Bologna By Night”, “Ghetto Blaster”, “Parole”, “Rendez vous col delirio”, Coltelli”.

Dj Shocca: Ciao a tutti, what’s good kids?

Oppure bevo qualcosa. O entrambi.

Puoi svelare qualche segreto in merito a come hai ottenuto queste timbriche così caratteristiche?”

Come e’ nata quella strumentale cosi iconica?”

Top secret. Get ready 2 rock kids!!!

Welcome back to dirtydagoes.com, the project that proposes new visions gravitating around Hip-Hop, “urban” culture and new media-art.

Our community has solid roots in the past but is always expanding into the near future. This first appointment of Europe Radar of 2022 tunes in to the news of our continent. The radar is on, looking for doped material.

France. Sam’s feat. Benjamin Epps

Here are two heavyweights from the French scene. Sam’s is the most experienced, he was born in Bordeaux in 1983, he is of Sudanese origin and has had experiences in the world of cinema and sport, demonstrating that talent is almost never compartmentalized. Benjamin Epps is only 25 years old, he is originally from Gabon and is a recent revelation that is making its mark very quickly among the big names in French-speaking rap. The two MC’s have very different timbres which combine in a very incisive result. The lyrics of this song are made up of sharp punchlines and worplay (yes we read the translation of the lyrics) on a well-made beat. As always, rap from beyond the Alps reserves pleasant discoveries and keeps the bar of European rap high.

U.K. Lunar C

This MC is active since 2010, he is originally known for success in rap battle Don’t Flop and a multitude of other UK battle-related awards, he has various projects under his belt and over the years has built a noteworthy career by collaborating with artists such as Ocean Wisdom and Dirty Dike. This short and direct piece does not feature any “hook” or “refrain”, it is produced by Farma G and transports us into a dark and hostile atmosphere thanks to the choice of samples with a “rock-prog” flavor. This movement of English “white hard core rappers” continues to feed the niche of lovers of the genre, even those who are particularly hungrier than usual, perhaps because actually orphaned of “sui generis” products such as those of Vinnie Paz and his AOTPs, who are not very active today compared to the previous decade.

Holland. Benny Sings

Benny Sings is a Dutch singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He made his debut in 1999 as bassist of the Dutch Hip Hop group Abstract Dialect and has 9 studio albums to his credit. The artist has recently released “Beat Tape II” with the American independent label Stones Throw Records, which once again seems to be a guarantee of quality. “Beat Tape II” is a very “soulfull” record whose common thread is the massive sampling of drum breaks. Several international features stand out in the project but our selection offers a 100% Dutch song with the participation of Faberyayo.

Greece. Sadomas

It’s not easy at all to find reliable information on the Greek scene. Sadomas is from Thessaloniki and is linked to the English scene by several collaborations. He has a hyper-recognizable style thanks to the unique sonority of his voice. This recently released piece is produced by Sardos97 and uses an asian music ethnic sample. The upcoming product has a bite even for those who do not understand an “alpha” of the Greek language, because as always, flow, style and metrics speak a universal language.

Romania. Cedry2k

Born in 1980 in Bucharest and active since ’98, Cedry2k was fundamental in the early stages of the Romanian local scene because he co-founded Facem Records, the first independent Hip Hop label with blue, yellow and red stripes. Over the years he has released 7 solo albums and numerous side projects. This new release speaks of stringent topicality with a lyric video that enhances the text. The instrumental recovers the classic sound and has the signature of the Romanian producer Dax.

Germany. Danase & Tru Comers

MC Danase and beatmaker Tru Comers offer us a simple but impactful street video. Danase is German but the song is released for the Swiss independent label Comin Tru Records which is mostly involved in pushing artists with a boom bap sound. Note of merit for the beautiful Polo Sport jackets sported by the protagonists in the clip, also for the hypnotic groove of the track, the sound of the snare drum and the filtered samples bring us back to a smoky NY 1995 style atmosphere. he is alive and in excellent health on our continent.

In the 70s, jogging was the dominant trend and one of the most iconic sneaker of the time was the Onitsuka Tiger Corsair. Their unmistakeable design and the unmatched comfort made them one of the most mocked up and bootlegged models. The first version released in 1968 for the Olympic Games in Mexico City, and were designed by the mind of Bill Bowerman, track coach of University of Oregon and of Oregon Ducks but also partner, together with his pupil Phil Knight, of the small footwear distribution company Blue Ribbon Sports. The small Beaverton based firm, which will later become Nike, owned the exclusive rights of the model that will turn out to be a bestseller of that time.

Bowerman started as technical advisor for BRS developing a prototype of a new runner, using different bits and parts from two already existing Onitsuka Tiger models. The company thought the idea of this hybrid was solid and good, starting quickly its production with thetemporary name TG-24. They needed the right name and thinking about the place of the olympic event, after choosing initially Mexico, that was dropped by Onitsuka Tiger, they opted for calling them Aztec. Unfortunately adidas anticipated them releasing the Azteca Gold, another track shoe, and threatened legal actions. The name was then changed in Cortez with Bowerman explaining the choice with “the Spaniard who kicked the shit out of the Aztecs”, honoring Hernán Cortés Monroy Pizarro Altamirano.

The Cortez were a shoe ahead of time, fully loaded of shock absorbing cushioning along the whole sole and an extra splice on the heel for an extra bounce. Eventually the relationship between Onitsuka Tiger and Blue Ribbon Sports soured because BRS, during their business partnership distributing OT, launched their new brand Nike, unbeknownst to their Nipponese partner. The aggravating step was the one to launch their own Cortez Nike branded, identical to OT version but with the Swoosh instead of the “Tiger stripes”. The betrayal from Knight and Bowerman was discovered by chance during a visit of an Onitsuka Tiger manager at the L.A. warehouse where several hidden pairs were found in the stockroom.

Few models in the sneaker industry history caused a seism like the Cortez did. Obviously, there was a trial for the rights and the court decreed that both the plaintiff and the defendant could sell the model but only one could us the name Cortez for the model. Where Nike kept the original name, Onitsuka Tiger renamed the shoe in Corsair. The shoe remains still now the only sneaker to become a bestseller with two different brands, main actor of a story of business and betrayal.

“All we really wanted was a ’95 bad boy logo”
– Skyzoo in ’95 Bad Boy Logo

Former acts: Black Rob, Craig Mack, Dj Clark Kent, Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, Lil’ Cease, Ma$e, Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Puffy “Sean” Combs, Sony Music Entertainment, TLC, The Lox, The Notorious B.I.G, The Source.

1) The Notorious B.I.G “Ready To Die” (1994)

2) The Notorious B.I.G “Life After Death” (1997)

More Problems, Sky’s The Limit). LAD riunisce il gotha dei produttori newyorkesi nel loro periodo di grazia (Moo Bee, Buckwild, Preemo, Rza, Havoc), regalando dei classici intramontabili (Ten Crack Commandments, Kick in the door?, Going Back To Cali) che legano indissolubilmente il secondo disco di Biggie al primo, rendendolo un successore di ottima fattura. In conclusione, LAD ha fissato nell’immaginario collettivo la figura del Black Frank White quale indiscusso King of New York, capace con i subliminal disses di “Kick in the door?” o lo story-telling della finta rapina di “I got a story to tell”, consumatasi realmente a danno del compianto giocatore dell’NBA Anthony Mason, di fornire molteplici chiavi di lettura dei pezzi e significazioni, senza pregiudicarne l’immediatezza ed efficacia.

3) Lil Kim “Hard Core” (1996)

Highlights

Queen Bitch, Drugs, Spend a little doe, Big Momma Thang, Crush on you.

4) Junior M.A.F.I.A “Conspiracy” (1995)

Highlights

Realms of Junior Mafia, Players Anthem, Get Money, Craazay.

5) Puff Daddy and The family – “No way out” (1997)

Highlights

Young G’s, Victory, All about the benjamins, Been Around The World.

“Two Nights In Marrakesh” – Al.Divino x Big Ghost Ltd

“The Grand Finale 2021″ – Page Kennedy ft. The Game, Locksmith, Mysonne, Royce Da 5’9”, 3D Natee, KXNG CROOKED, Grafh e Ransom

& The D.O.C.

“Space Bar” – Your Old Droog

UK. Slipp Skills & LU3 Beatz

L’underground inglese è sempre in movimento.

🇬🇧 ENG

Europe Radar is back, we have the spotlight on what’s happening in Europe within our musical environment. “Big Up” for our readers, who have suggested which direction to peek in some countries, and above all, thanks for the good vibes given by the new contributors in the editorial staff.

UK. Slipp Skills & LU3 Beatz

The British underground is always on the move. This song is featured on the new Slipp Skills album “Multiple Mind States” released on October 31st for the Runt Life Records label. Here is another confirmation that the hypnotic stuff plus the English accent always have an accurate chemistry. Maybe this single deserves more hype in the crowded local psychedelic corner, with High Focus and Blah Records dominating. The other tracks on the album are produced by different beat-makers, in “Dan Aykroyd” LU3 Beatz shines. You can see the super power of groove in this producer, the one that make head bumping. The sound engineering of the album is by Chemo. 5 stars for the demential video, probably produced of a Carlsberg six pack’s budget, we love this type of things!

Germany. Haftbefehl

If there is a list of people to not mess with in Germany, he is definitely in the Top 5. The English translation of his name would be “warrant for detention”. Haftbefehl is the older brother of the more well-known Capo Azzlack. Teutonic gangsta rap but the MC has a Kurdish and Turkish heritage. His videos are hyper explicit and the lyrics are pure, the songs are musical and despite the language limit they are “catchy” even for those who dont speak German. Haftbefehl is not a momentary phenomenon of the current criminal drill and trap wave, in Germany he is an established rap superstar capable of dominating any type of beat, “1999 pt1” and “1999 pt2” are the perfect example. To fully understand the weight of the character, it is advisable to watch the clip of “WIEDER AM BLOCK” feat. SOUFIAN. As he himself says in the track “OFFEN”, do not dare to enter their neighborhood.

France. JuL

“Loi de la calle” is the first extract from the “Classico Organisé” compilation. The record was presented by JuL as one of the most ambitious French rap projects, because it hosts more than 150 artists mostly from Marseille and Paris. This song is a posse-cut with 8 emcees (Lacrim, Alonzo, Mister You, JuL, Niro, Kofs, Le Rat Luciano, DA Uzi) representing several generations of French rap, from the 90s to today. After a few hours of publication, the single seems to flare up on social media.

Poland. Halastra

The artist is underground, for us has been very difficult to find reliable information on his biography. The Rap Genius Polska page has defined him as one of the promises of the new Polish school since 2019. His catalog is quite large, there are many singles and video clips on Youtube. Just in these winter days he is releasing new material, the sound is DarkTrap, there is not even a shadow of autotune and winking refrains. The quality of the mc can be sensed, one gets the impression that despite the choice of a fresh and current sound, the school of origin is the one from rap battle and hard-core rapping. The Halastra material is solid.

Belgium. The Poignée de Punchlines

Give me 5 prod. has created a format based on a very simple concept: through Facebook groups funs choose 20 or 30 words that artists will have to integrate in a music production. Sometimes is also chosen a main concept in which to include keywords. This formula is cool and has been around for years, generating hundreds of videos and rap activities in French language. Several absurd characters stand out in the playlist, a brilliant stop-motion video by Billie Brelok and this artist called BALAO.

Czech Republic. 1312 Records, Michajlov, Daniel Vardan

1312 Rec is a very prolific reality in the Czech Republic. On their channel it is possible to listen to numerous songs that vary in quality and genre and which give ideas for those willing to learn more about the local scene. Michajlov and Daniel Vardan seem completely obsessed with Italian football, which (as a non-football fan) inspires us (however) a lot of sympathy, especially because the boys know how to rap and many songs are hard-core.

Denmark. Machacha

This rapper and producer released “The Hundred” for the Copenhagen Crates label. The disc is characterized by dark samples and dirty drums, in short, a typical Danish restaurant, which hosts in each track important guest such as Eastee Nack, Recognize Ali, Rigz, Jah-Monte and Supreme Celebral and more US artists. Worthy of praise the forerunner track “In The Dark” ft. Eto, Josiah The Gift & Swabs.

Holland. BlabberMouf

M.C. and prolific producer member of various crews including Het VerZet and Da Shogunz. He has several albums to his credit, his style is often characterized by extrabeats that never expire in mere technical virtuosity but that always retain a marked musicality. On January 1st the new album will be released, of which he has already released some singles, in the meantime we mention this little dutch classic.

40 nuove tracce aggiunte in TOP!

Prologo:

L’ultima volta ci siamo lasciati a New York all’inizio degli anni sessanta.

“All stars khaki Chuck Taylors what’s the word. Keep a gun on me and I love NY But it’s California till I die one more time. In killa kali we don’t rock timbos or fur”

The Game, Killa Kali

Flyers a Converse.

“Shoes guaranteed to make a kid run faster and jump higher”

The Sandlot 1993

“You don’t have to go to another planet to see the aliens, just look at the people in the interesting dresses of the seventies!”
― Mehmet Murat ildan

Welcome back to Kickstory, CRACKED’s dedicated section to sneaker history.

Prologue:

The last time we left each others in New York at the beginning of the sixties. ’60s were a relatively simple decade, with basically only two main models: Converse Chuck Taylor All Star and P.F. Flyers Center Hi.
We all know the Chucks, a shoe that is still now a contemporary staple despite its 103 years in the market and that sold more than a billion pairs worldwide, making it the most sold sneaker ever.

It’s interesting talking about P.F. Flyers Center Hi’s: in 1933, B.F. Goodrich, an American rubber company focused mainly on tires, decided to start to produce shoes and, thanks to the work of Hyman Whitman, patented the Posture Foundation plantar sole (what P.F. stands for).
Canadian badminton player Jack Purcell designed a canvas and rubber shoe with a smile on the toecap.
The shoe was so beautiful and popular that became a standard in some military circles and, in 1958, Boston Celtics Bob Cousy became the first pro athlete to wear them.
The naming rights of the model swapped then from P.F. Flyers to Converse.
After the boom in the 60s, the company had a hiatus, between 1975 and 2000.
In 2001 New Balance bought the brand to relaunch it in 2003.

Another Relevant name is surely PRO-Keds, born in 1949 and made to become the first real Converse competitor.
The first model was the Royal, followed by the Super. At the beginning of the 70s, they were already a reference for all the newyorkers in and outside the court, heavily challenging Chuck Taylors.

The Seventies:

The market then changed in the 70s when the competition increased thanks to new players. adidas introduced basketball leather sneakers, Keds decided to step-up presenting the PRO line.
Puma offered suede uppers on their sneakers and PONY (standing for Product Of New York) gained respect in the streets asking for their space.
In the seventies the market could offer to consumers a never seen before choice.
Despite this, the pro models shown on sport magazines like Sports Illustrated weren’t available for retail.
This scheme was similar to the winning one we can see nowadays, a formula that create the hype “daemon” with a big selection of models but limited resources to get them.
adidas Half Shells were made from ’74 to ’78 and at the time were a strictly pro model, extremely hard to get.
The difference with Superstars and Pro Models were the toebox didn’t cover the full toe.
adidas Americanas were worn by many ABA players being the league’s official sneaker in ’75, and were considered probably the most coveted of those years.
Nike, headquartered in Oregon, started to be relevant in the game with 3 models: All Court, Blazer and Bruin.
The first ones had still a voice, despite canvas was gradually disappearing.
Blazers were the first high top Nike basketball shoes and became important when University of Oregon and Washington together with Portland Trailblazers started to wear them.
The Bruins were their first lowcut basketball sneaker and we all remember them Marty McFly‘s feet.

Special mentions are due to two models: Wilson Bata John Wooden and PONY Top Star.

The first model has a particular and interesting history.
As we know now, this was the first collaboration between two brands: this short-time relationship brought to entitle a model to John Wooden, the most successful college coach of that time, able to win 10 NCAA Championships in 12 years, 88 consecutive wins, 7 times Coach of the Year, Hall of Fame both as player and coach.
Despite it was a good sneaker with a polyurethane sole, the sales didn’t go well and were stopped.
PONY was a very young company, founded by Roberto Muller in 1972. In 1977 fifty NBA players choosed the brand making a lot of noise, way before Spud Webb winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1986 defeating Dominique Wilkins.
A memorable scene that became immortal at Rucker Park while Harry James, a Pro Rucker referee who worked also for PONY, opened the back of his car to give away shoes to all the players in the playground: probably the first viral street promotion in footwear.
Top Stars were the brand’s entry-level sneakers and maybe for this reason they became the most widespread model, even more than PONY Pro Models that were the most resistant sneaker ever made by the brand.

Rock, Don’t Stock:

People started to look for a model in a new colorway that nobody had rocked in the block to draw attention on the court.
Basketball was one of the main drives of fashion, the style was always linked to the functionality.
It was a time where the loyalty to a brand didn’t exist yet and the colors were more important than the brand.
Mint conditions were a no go cause the basket regulated the balance of the whole game.
If you were playing with too clean sneakers, it meant you didn’t play long or hard enough.

The time between ’75 and ’78 has seen the brands competing to increase their offers to customers.
Converse, PRO-Keds and Puma were widely distributed, but the connoisseurs started to notice that, despite a limited distribution, adidas, PONY and Nike were solid alternatives.

Among the new classics Converse Pro Model worn by Dr. J, Puma Basket and Super Basket (basically a leather version of the Clydes) and adidas Jabbar, there were a lot of new hot models that everybody wanted.

Rucker Park Leaders:

Back to our New York City focus, in the end of the 60s the Big Apple was setting up to become the world’s Mecca of playground basketball, funk, block parties and then, of Hip-Hop.
The seventies shaked up the old post-war merit system: civil rights, science, technology, art ran towards and evolution that was unthinkable before.
The playground between 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, continued to be the epicenter of what shortly was going to be a real cultural schism.
Rucker Park consisted of a consolidated group of key people who influenced and shaped fashion, music and the consumer attitude as we know it today.

Let’s talk about some of the main characters.

The MVP of the roster is without a doubt Roberto Garcia, known as Bobbito AKA Kool Bob Love. Bobby is considered a sneaker authority, an OG who writes books, shows up in movies and is interviewed for documentaries and books. Kool Bob Love also appeared in several basketball games and collaborated with Nike, adidas e Puma on special models.
He’s a DJ, writer, director, basketball player, and last but not least a member of the almighty Rock Steady Crew. He’s unanimously considered the most eminent voice of the first years of sneaker culture in New York.

Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland AKA Stickman has been one of the most legendary basketball players ever. Born in Harlem, went to Norfolk St. before being chosen by Chicago Bulls.
He became one of the Pro Rucker stars but unfortunately his career stopped in 1971 when he went to jail. In the 60s and in the first 70s was considered a real style icon in New York, way before Walt “Clyde” Frazier, wearing a pair of fresh out the box sneaker every time he played a game.

Let’s stay in the playground to talk about Joe “The Destroyer” Hammond, widely considered one of the best shooters of the whole New York.
At Rucker Park is unforgettable when he played against Julius Erving and Charlie Scott, both Hall Of Famers, defeating both with more than 50 points.
He became famous for his 1-VS-1 games where the players bet their shoes: Joe never came back home in socks.

Yeah, I put the city on my back

Got it poppin’ on these niggas, put the city on the map (Yeah, see what I did)

– Conway The Machine | Griselda, City On The Map

Grazie a ON THE MAP!

ON THE MAP! E’ la geografia del RAP.

http://

ON THE MAP! is an editorial project designed to build an interactive map of rap music.

The column is the compass offered by Dirty Dagoes to our readers, to orient themselves among the places and key moments that have marked the history of RAP.

An overview through the reviews of the albums that have assumed the role of “game changers“, creators of new patterns, currents and musical paradigms.

Through the periodic publication of independent and / or linked episodes “ON THE MAP!” aims to give a place and a time to those musical movements, currents and eras that have shaped the history and identity of this genre.

The albums are told through historical information, indiscretions, curiosities and anecdotes linked mainly to the places lived and populated by the artists protagonists of each episode.

The format uses an interactive map that indicates the “Hot-Spots” in which the events that have made, the artists mentioned in our articles, protagonists of past and present history take place.

Each “HotSpot” is geo-localized on a digital map, the data is cross-referenced based on various indicators, including the history, “kinship” and “lineage” of musical genres.

Thanks to ON THE MAP! It is possible to concretely visualize which places have marked history and were the cultural forge of the records that have remained indelible in the collective imagination.

Not just a map, not just reviews.

ON THE MAP! It is the geography of the RAP.
