In the 70s, jogging was the dominant trend and one of the most iconic sneaker of the time was the Onitsuka Tiger Corsair. Their unmistakeable design and the unmatched comfort made them one of the most mocked up and bootlegged models. The first version released in 1968 for the Olympic Games in Mexico City, and were designed by the mind of Bill Bowerman, track coach of University of Oregon and of Oregon Ducks but also partner, together with his pupil Phil Knight, of the small footwear distribution company Blue Ribbon Sports. The small Beaverton based firm, which will later become Nike, owned the exclusive rights of the model that will turn out to be a bestseller of that time.

Bowerman started as technical advisor for BRS developing a prototype of a new runner, using different bits and parts from two already existing Onitsuka Tiger models. The company thought the idea of this hybrid was solid and good, starting quickly its production with thetemporary name TG-24. They needed the right name and thinking about the place of the olympic event, after choosing initially Mexico, that was dropped by Onitsuka Tiger, they opted for calling them Aztec. Unfortunately adidas anticipated them releasing the Azteca Gold, another track shoe, and threatened legal actions. The name was then changed in Cortez with Bowerman explaining the choice with “the Spaniard who kicked the shit out of the Aztecs”, honoring Hernán Cortés Monroy Pizarro Altamirano.

The Cortez were a shoe ahead of time, fully loaded of shock absorbing cushioning along the whole sole and an extra splice on the heel for an extra bounce. Eventually the relationship between Onitsuka Tiger and Blue Ribbon Sports soured because BRS, during their business partnership distributing OT, launched their new brand Nike, unbeknownst to their Nipponese partner. The aggravating step was the one to launch their own Cortez Nike branded, identical to OT version but with the Swoosh instead of the “Tiger stripes”. The betrayal from Knight and Bowerman was discovered by chance during a visit of an Onitsuka Tiger manager at the L.A. warehouse where several hidden pairs were found in the stockroom.

Few models in the sneaker industry history caused a seism like the Cortez did. Obviously, there was a trial for the rights and the court decreed that both the plaintiff and the defendant could sell the model but only one could us the name Cortez for the model. Where Nike kept the original name, Onitsuka Tiger renamed the shoe in Corsair. The shoe remains still now the only sneaker to become a bestseller with two different brands, main actor of a story of business and betrayal.

Prologo:

L’ultima volta ci siamo lasciati a New York all’inizio degli anni sessanta.

“All stars khaki Chuck Taylors what’s the word. Keep a gun on me and I love NY But it’s California till I die one more time. In killa kali we don’t rock timbos or fur”

The Game, Killa Kali

Flyers a Converse.

The Sandlot 1993

“You don’t have to go to another planet to see the aliens, just look at the people in the interesting dresses of the seventies!”
― Mehmet Murat ildan

Welcome back to Kickstory, CRACKED’s dedicated section to sneaker history.

Prologue:

The last time we left each others in New York at the beginning of the sixties. ’60s were a relatively simple decade, with basically only two main models: Converse Chuck Taylor All Star and P.F. Flyers Center Hi.
We all know the Chucks, a shoe that is still now a contemporary staple despite its 103 years in the market and that sold more than a billion pairs worldwide, making it the most sold sneaker ever.

It’s interesting talking about P.F. Flyers Center Hi’s: in 1933, B.F. Goodrich, an American rubber company focused mainly on tires, decided to start to produce shoes and, thanks to the work of Hyman Whitman, patented the Posture Foundation plantar sole (what P.F. stands for).
Canadian badminton player Jack Purcell designed a canvas and rubber shoe with a smile on the toecap.
The shoe was so beautiful and popular that became a standard in some military circles and, in 1958, Boston Celtics Bob Cousy became the first pro athlete to wear them.
The naming rights of the model swapped then from P.F. Flyers to Converse.
After the boom in the 60s, the company had a hiatus, between 1975 and 2000.
In 2001 New Balance bought the brand to relaunch it in 2003.

Another Relevant name is surely PRO-Keds, born in 1949 and made to become the first real Converse competitor.
The first model was the Royal, followed by the Super. At the beginning of the 70s, they were already a reference for all the newyorkers in and outside the court, heavily challenging Chuck Taylors.

The Seventies:

The market then changed in the 70s when the competition increased thanks to new players. adidas introduced basketball leather sneakers, Keds decided to step-up presenting the PRO line.
Puma offered suede uppers on their sneakers and PONY (standing for Product Of New York) gained respect in the streets asking for their space.
In the seventies the market could offer to consumers a never seen before choice.
Despite this, the pro models shown on sport magazines like Sports Illustrated weren’t available for retail.
This scheme was similar to the winning one we can see nowadays, a formula that create the hype “daemon” with a big selection of models but limited resources to get them.
adidas Half Shells were made from ’74 to ’78 and at the time were a strictly pro model, extremely hard to get.
The difference with Superstars and Pro Models were the toebox didn’t cover the full toe.
adidas Americanas were worn by many ABA players being the league’s official sneaker in ’75, and were considered probably the most coveted of those years.
Nike, headquartered in Oregon, started to be relevant in the game with 3 models: All Court, Blazer and Bruin.
The first ones had still a voice, despite canvas was gradually disappearing.
Blazers were the first high top Nike basketball shoes and became important when University of Oregon and Washington together with Portland Trailblazers started to wear them.
The Bruins were their first lowcut basketball sneaker and we all remember them Marty McFly‘s feet.

Special mentions are due to two models: Wilson Bata John Wooden and PONY Top Star.

The first model has a particular and interesting history.
As we know now, this was the first collaboration between two brands: this short-time relationship brought to entitle a model to John Wooden, the most successful college coach of that time, able to win 10 NCAA Championships in 12 years, 88 consecutive wins, 7 times Coach of the Year, Hall of Fame both as player and coach.
Despite it was a good sneaker with a polyurethane sole, the sales didn’t go well and were stopped.
PONY was a very young company, founded by Roberto Muller in 1972. In 1977 fifty NBA players choosed the brand making a lot of noise, way before Spud Webb winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1986 defeating Dominique Wilkins.
A memorable scene that became immortal at Rucker Park while Harry James, a Pro Rucker referee who worked also for PONY, opened the back of his car to give away shoes to all the players in the playground: probably the first viral street promotion in footwear.
Top Stars were the brand’s entry-level sneakers and maybe for this reason they became the most widespread model, even more than PONY Pro Models that were the most resistant sneaker ever made by the brand.

Rock, Don’t Stock:

People started to look for a model in a new colorway that nobody had rocked in the block to draw attention on the court.
Basketball was one of the main drives of fashion, the style was always linked to the functionality.
It was a time where the loyalty to a brand didn’t exist yet and the colors were more important than the brand.
Mint conditions were a no go cause the basket regulated the balance of the whole game.
If you were playing with too clean sneakers, it meant you didn’t play long or hard enough.

The time between ’75 and ’78 has seen the brands competing to increase their offers to customers.
Converse, PRO-Keds and Puma were widely distributed, but the connoisseurs started to notice that, despite a limited distribution, adidas, PONY and Nike were solid alternatives.

Among the new classics Converse Pro Model worn by Dr. J, Puma Basket and Super Basket (basically a leather version of the Clydes) and adidas Jabbar, there were a lot of new hot models that everybody wanted.

Rucker Park Leaders:

Back to our New York City focus, in the end of the 60s the Big Apple was setting up to become the world’s Mecca of playground basketball, funk, block parties and then, of Hip-Hop.
The seventies shaked up the old post-war merit system: civil rights, science, technology, art ran towards and evolution that was unthinkable before.
The playground between 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, continued to be the epicenter of what shortly was going to be a real cultural schism.
Rucker Park consisted of a consolidated group of key people who influenced and shaped fashion, music and the consumer attitude as we know it today.

Let’s talk about some of the main characters.

The MVP of the roster is without a doubt Roberto Garcia, known as Bobbito AKA Kool Bob Love. Bobby is considered a sneaker authority, an OG who writes books, shows up in movies and is interviewed for documentaries and books. Kool Bob Love also appeared in several basketball games and collaborated with Nike, adidas e Puma on special models.
He’s a DJ, writer, director, basketball player, and last but not least a member of the almighty Rock Steady Crew. He’s unanimously considered the most eminent voice of the first years of sneaker culture in New York.

Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland AKA Stickman has been one of the most legendary basketball players ever. Born in Harlem, went to Norfolk St. before being chosen by Chicago Bulls.
He became one of the Pro Rucker stars but unfortunately his career stopped in 1971 when he went to jail. In the 60s and in the first 70s was considered a real style icon in New York, way before Walt “Clyde” Frazier, wearing a pair of fresh out the box sneaker every time he played a game.

Let’s stay in the playground to talk about Joe “The Destroyer” Hammond, widely considered one of the best shooters of the whole New York.
At Rucker Park is unforgettable when he played against Julius Erving and Charlie Scott, both Hall Of Famers, defeating both with more than 50 points.
He became famous for his 1-VS-1 games where the players bet their shoes: Joe never came back home in socks.

Good Shoes Take You Good Places

– Unknow

🇬🇧

“Once Upon a Sole in Harlem” Ep. 1: The Genesis (1870-1950)

Did you know that sneakers have been around for 150 years? CRACKED is here to tell you more

The story begins before they became mainstream. This is when shoes still told everything about the wearer: the cultural background, the identity, the neighborhood of origin, the musical and sport culture.

It all started long before Nike and the NBA, long before the synergy between brands and sports superstars gave global visibility to the various designs and models.

James Naismith invented basketball in the late 20th century while teaching at Springfield’s YMCA. The popularity of basketball grew rapidly from then on.

In the ’10s of the twentieth century Theodore Roosevelt approved the creation of the first officially recognized society for the organization of official competitions, in 1927 the Harlem Globetrotters were born, in 1934 the Madison Square Garden in New York hosts the first basketball tournament in front of 16,200 spectators.

Finally in 1946 the National Basketball Association (NBA) was born.

Good Shoes Take You Good Places

– Unknow

As basketball continued its ascent among established national and university sports such as rugby, tennis and football, the phenomenon of “sportswear” reached such peaks in audiences that a group of US plastic industrialists were led to develop and market “sport shoes” on a global scale.

In the 1950s, sneakers changed their status from sport shoes to everyday shoes.

We are now in Harlem, in the borough of Manhattan and Rucker Park (between 155th Street and 8th Avenue) was the mecca of street basketball at that time.

Even today, the Summer EBC Tournament is held every year, places like this are the fulcrum of showing off their “swag” in the second half of the twentieth century.

The 1950s were the Converse era thanks to the Chuck Taylor All Star, the very first signature shoe, where P.F. Flyers and PRO-Keds were only the runners-up. The All Star design was consolidated and has been the same every year, so no one thought at the time about buying more pairs to collect them without wearing them.
